Chapter 36: Sleep Club?
Wen Yang thought he might have a problem.
Or maybe Ning Chu had the problem.
Could it be that since the start of the term he’s always been hanging out with Ning Chu? He actually felt like he had become Ning Chu’s little brother, and doing things against her wishes made him inexplicably guilty and uneasy.
“Wen Yang! Bring me food! I’m going upstairs to check on Hei Dou!”
Having just finished military training, Ning Chu, who moments ago appeared ready to faint, now zipped past Wen Yang like a gust of wind, sprinting out of the playground.
Wen Yang stood there, hat in hand, mumbling, “Today she’s not going to the cafeteria with me.”
“Shao Qing, going to the cafeteria?”
“I’ve already ordered takeout with Wang Jie.”
“Alright.”
He was so used to eating with Ning Chu, so used to having a little shadow trailing him, that suddenly going to the cafeteria alone felt a bit lonely.
Without Ning Chu, he wouldn’t even know how to turn away any girls that might come after him.
Feeling a bit down, Wen Yang shoved his hands in his pockets and strolled towards the cafeteria, reminiscing about the meals Ning Chu usually ordered while calculating how to make his limited cash last through the week.
Though he was being thrifty, it was his first time in college, and having some money to spend freely inevitably led him to splurge a bit.
The cafeteria, freshly liberated from military training, was bustling as usual, with a large number of students in military uniforms queued up at the serving counter. Wen Yang got his food and found a secluded corner to sit in.
A plate of shredded pork with green peppers and a bowl of rice topped with vegetable soup,
“Doesn’t Ning Chu always order scrambled eggs with tomatoes?”
“And I need to get something for the cat to eat…”
He was muttering to himself when a fragrant breeze swept by, and a smiling girl plopped down next to him.
Wen Yang didn’t even lift his head; just the overpowering, exaggerated scent of her perfume told him she wasn’t Ning Chu.
“Wen Yang~ Our club is really great! Once the freshmen’s military training is over, we plan to rent a villa for our club activities this weekend! A lot of beautiful girls will come!”
Wen Yang shot a glance at the girl beside him.
“Don’t worry! It won’t cost anything, our club president is a rich girl, and she’s covering the entire gathering!”
Ever since the school held club recruitment last week, this girl somehow got hold of his contact information and had been pestering him online every day to join the club.
This time, she had come right to him.
Wen Yang was actually somewhat interested in university clubs, but the name “Sleep Club” sounded pretty ridiculous.
“I’m not really interested in joining a club,” he politely declined again, “I don’t really like gathering activities.”
“Gathering activities are essential! College isn’t just about studying, you also need to broaden your social circle. Those connections will really help when you enter society, right? Plus, you can’t just stay in the dorm every weekend! Going out with the club to have fun and participate in activities can also be a way to train yourself.”
He knew what she was saying made sense, and his expression began to waver with doubt.
Rubbing his temples in annoyance, he put down his chopsticks, exasperated, “Why do you always seek me out? There are so many other freshmen who haven’t joined clubs yet.”
“Our Sleep Club just got started this year! We’re short on people!”
So, are club activities just lounging together on a sunny afternoon with a few or dozens of people napping on the playground?
What kind of gathering at the villa—was it just enjoying the experience of sleeping in a villa?
Wen Yang couldn’t quite understand what the club was even about and asked, “How many people are already in it?”
“Five! All girls! We also invited some others! By then, we should have around ten come!”
Do girls really like sleeping this much?
“Fine, fine, just stop bugging me.” Wen Yang looked at the girl’s starry, hopeful eyes and waved his hand in defeat, “I still need to eat.”
“Yay! Don’t forget the gathering this weekend!”
“……”
Watching her happily scamper away, Wen Yang couldn’t help but twitch his lips in confusion about their thought processes.
After finishing his meal, he packaged up some food for Ning Chu, and then bought a box of goat milk and a boiled egg for Hei Dou.
As he opened the dormitory door, he turned around and saw Ning Chu squatting in the corner, playing with the cat.
“He Dou~ He Dou? A little attention over here?”
This guy was naturally smaller and weaker than the average man, and squatting made him look even tinier, which made Wen Yang instinctively slow his steps—as if, if he wasn’t careful, he might accidentally step on Ning Chu.
“Here’s your lunch.”
Hearing a voice behind him, Ning Chu realized Wen Yang was back, turned, looked up at him, and grinned, “You didn’t buy me a bunch of things I don’t like, did you?”
“Nope, should all be your favorites.”
He leaned on his knees and stood up, smiling broadly as he reached out to take the takeout box from Wen Yang, but suddenly froze mid-step, his brows furrowing as his nose twitched.
Wen Yang’s expression froze too.
Ning Chu suspiciously peered at him, sniffed with his nose tilted forward, and caught a faint scent of perfume lingering on his sleeve.
“……”
Stepping back a couple of paces, Wen Yang’s back hit the door, with no way to retreat, but Ning Chu stubbornly inched closer, almost nuzzling into his collar like a cat.
“Whoa~ I just went to the bathroom and you’re all spicy now?”
Zhang Shaoqing returned to the dorm from the balcony and saw Ning Chu cornering Wen Yang.
“No! The perfume he’s wearing is so strong…” Ning Chu huffed softly, wrinkling his nose, “It smells awful, like a mixture of perfume and sweat; just disgusting.”
“Is it?”
“Don’t believe me? Come and smell!”
“Could it really be as bad as you say?”
Zhang Shaoqing immediately became interested and bounced over to join Ning Chu in cornering Wen Yang.
Wen Yang found himself wedged at the dorm entrance, flanked by Ning Chu on the left and Zhang Shaoqing on the right, his expression becoming increasingly awkward.
“Dang! What a cheap perfume smell! Go wash your butt!”
“Exactly!” Ning Chu nodded vigorously, “It’s even worse than the perfume smell on the bus!”
Good thing he reacted quickly; otherwise, he might have been treated like a weirdo.
Wang Jie glanced back at the three of them and silently thought, “What a bunch of weird roommates…”
“Alright, alright, I’m going to wash up.”
With no other choice, Wen Yang went to the wardrobe, grabbed some clothes, and headed for the bathroom. Wang Jie, unable to suppress his curiosity, looked at the two still debating the perfume, “Wait!”
“What?”
“Let me smell too!”
“???”
What a bunch of clowns!
Wen Yang ignored them entirely and walked straight out of the dorm.
Seeing Wen Yang leave, Ning Chu yawned, glanced at Hei Dou, who was exploring a new world in the corner of the dorm, and returned to his desk with the takeout box, opened a drama to watch while eating lunch.
He frowned, losing his appetite a little.
It was just letting Wen Yang eat by himself in the cafeteria, and that guy was off gallivanting again! He seriously couldn’t stay still for even a moment!
