Chapter 209: The Confused Brother
“Ning Chu, why don’t you take a few days off?”
“Uh?”
During lunch, their mother was fixated on a TV drama playing on her phone while peeling shrimp shells for her two sons, explaining, “There’s a lot going on, and I’m worried you won’t have time over the weekend.”
Ning Chu felt a bit tempted. After finally experiencing the warmth of home again, she was reluctant to leave.
But it’s only been a day, and she found herself missing Wen Yang…
There really was a lot to do. Her mother wanted to take her to get a new hairstyle, go shopping for women’s clothing, and even celebrate her birthday.
At the same time, she needed to go to a big hospital for a physical exam and change her ID back in the countryside.
Returning to school on Sunday evening would require finishing everything in a day and a half—not exactly a relaxing thought.
“Is it just a birthday party? What’s the big deal?” Ning Yuan couldn’t hold back any longer, interjecting, “Are you two hiding something from me?”
He looked up at the two at the table. His younger brother was staring down, seemingly shy, while their mother smiled knowingly at him.
Their mother placed a few peeled shrimp onto the plate, only for Ning Chu to snatch all of them up cleanly.
“Leave a couple for your brother.”
“Oh~”
Ning Chu was on a roll, already working on half a big blue crab, with a few mantis shrimps in her bowl, and a plate of seafood noodles in front of her.
“Ning Yuan.” Their mother’s gentle gaze turned to Ning Yuan, smiling as she asked, “How would you feel about having a little sister?”
“Not interested.”
“What? Having a little sister wouldn’t be nice?”
Ning Yuan sighed, “Mom, you’re in your forties. Do you really plan on having more kids? Aren’t you worried about complications?”
“Not having more kids, just asking.”
Now he looked even more serious: “If you bring home a stepdad, I’ll just call him Uncle. If he has a daughter, whatever, just as long as she’s not too young—I can’t stand kids.”
“Where are you going with this?”
“I think you should find someone… Your younger brother is in college now; you don’t have anyone at home to keep you company.”
Their mother’s smile stiffened slightly. Why were they talking about Ning Chu, only to end up discussing her?
She glanced at Ning Chu, who was barely stifling a laugh.
Wait a minute, she’s a daughter now.
“After dinner, we’ll go get your hair done.”
“Mom…” Now it was Ning Chu’s turn to object, feeling a bit troubled. She explained to her mother, “I can’t, I’m staying in the dorm.”
Hearing that, their mother’s expression darkened.
A succubus living in a boys’ dorm? Just imagining it made her shudder.
Would that be a never-ending party? A year from now, who knows whose child would belong to whom?
From a succubus’s perspective, it might sound like a happy sex life, but from a mother’s viewpoint, she wanted to rip every boy’s head off in that dorm.
“Get out of there right now!”
“Oh…”
Ning Chu shrank her neck in response, and given how twisted her mother’s thoughts seemed, she couldn’t help but explain, “They don’t know! I’ve hidden it really well.”
“Still, you need to move out!”
“Okay!”
She had originally intended to rely on her family’s support to move out, so she didn’t mind much.
But Ning Yuan was left completely dumbfounded.
What were they talking about? He didn’t understand a word of it?!
His younger brother seemed fine living in the boys’ dorm; why did they have to move out?
“Finished? I’m off to play on the computer.”
Ning Chu watched Ning Yuan leave the table, assuming he’d entered his bedroom, then turned to her mother, saying, “Mom, just a little trim is fine; no dyeing or perming.”
“Why not? Looking nice is good, isn’t it?”
“In my classmates’ eyes, I still look like a guy…”
Getting a feminine hairstyle would surely lead people to think she was a trap, and she was nervous that even the counselor might have something to say about it.
Her mother finally gave in to her wishes: “Alright, once your ID is changed, I’ll come help you update your school records.”
“Mm.”
Even expediting a new ID would take at least a week. Changing gender information? That’d probably take even longer.
She was already prepared to stay off-campus for the next month or two.
After downing her seafood noodles and letting out a satisfied belch while holding her slightly protruding belly, Ning Chu stood up, “I’m off to play on the computer~”
After such a feast, she found her stomach a bit uncomfortable.
She slowly made her way to Ning Yuan’s bedroom, pulling over a chair from the corner and plopping down next to her brother.
A light, feminine fragrance enveloped her, prompting Ning Yuan to turn and look at his sister.
“You want to play?”
“You go ahead; I’ll just watch.”
Their home only had one computer, and the two would often bicker over who gets to use it first.
Ning Yuan distractedly played his game, unable to contain his curiosity any longer: “Are you and Mom hiding something from me? Spill it.”
“Um…”
“And why did you suddenly stop living in the dorm? Did your roommates bully you?”
“No…”
He set down his mouse, his eyes thoroughly examining Ning Chu’s delicate yet alluring features, brow furrowed in impatience: “Stop being vague and just say it.”
Seeing her brother’s growing annoyance, Ning Chu shrank her neck, resting one foot on the chair and wrapping her arms around her legs, mumbling, “It’s about what Mom asked you.”
She didn’t want to keep it a secret any longer since Ning Yuan had already observed plenty of details and she was worried about widening the gap between them.
“Did she really find us a stepdad?!”
“No… it’s about your sister.” Ning Chu lowered her head, her cheeks turning slightly red.
“???”
“I’m… I’m a girl now.”
Ning Yuan nearly fell out of his chair, eyes wide: “Wait! You want to be a girl? Mom won’t actually go along with that, right? Do we have the money for a surgery?”
“I’m not trying to be a girl… I already am one.”
Every confession felt like another layer of torment for Ning Chu’s heart.
She sighed, feeling utterly worn-out: “You’ll understand once my checkup results come back.”
“……”
Ning Yuan stared at his brother in shock, never having looked at Ning Chu so seriously before, from head to toe, analyzing the whole package.
She really was a pretty little girl. If she spruced herself up a bit, she could easily debut as a star.
A sister…
Although he had had his fair share of guesses in his mind, the wildest possibility was merely that his brother had some gender dysphoria issues and wanted to transition into a girl. But the reality was even more outrageous: his brother had already become a girl in just a few months.
He was caught off guard, and even a young person like him couldn’t wrap his head around it. How did their mother accept this change so effortlessly?
Now it made sense why Ning Chu had burst into tears when she first got home.
Ning Yuan sighed, pushing his glasses back up his nose, giving up on the game, and silently moved to sit at the head of the bed.
He leaned back against the wall, watching Ning Chu’s awkward sitting pose.
She isn’t playing a prank on me, is she?
Yet when he glanced at the strap of her bra peeking out from her shoulder…
No way? Is she really willing to sacrifice that much for a prank? Ning Chu couldn’t have done that.
Ning Yuan remained silent, lowering his head to search his phone for “What to do if your brother suddenly becomes your sister?”
