Chapter 142: Wen Yang
Ning Chu’s emotions were a bit complicated.
She followed Wen Yang, aimlessly strolling through the mall, always looking down at his shoes.
This inexplicable feeling, she had no idea how to handle it.
Wen Yang would probably feel miserable for a long time because of her rejection.
After all, she just didn’t want to become a supporting character in a Small Royal Text. How did things become so messy?
She quickened her pace, walked up beside Wen Yang, and sneaked a glance at his face.
The handsome male lead looked completely drained of energy, expressionless, lost in thought. He seemed to have slumped over.
Noticing her gaze, Wen Yang immediately forced a smile.
Awkward silence… It was painful to watch.
“Shall we head back?”
The atmosphere between them grew awkward, and Ning Chu lost her desire to shop.
They’d only watched half of the movie, but it was just after five in the afternoon. She stepped out of the mall and hailed a ride.
Sitting on a stone bench by the road, she propped her chin on her hands, staring longingly at the flowing traffic.
It shouldn’t be like this…
In the books, the protagonist should be confident, not care about being rejected by girls. Though most of the stories are about gory horror scenes, all descriptions of the protagonist are positive.
And now Wen Yang…
Ning Chu uncontrollably looked at him again, watching the big guy trying hard to mask his disappointment, his eyes dull and lifeless.
Insecure, introverted, sensitive, and fragile.
It was annoying and irritating to watch, completely unlike the character she had written or the Wen Yang she had gotten to know.
A car arrived, stopping in front of Wen Yang.
He opened the door but stood there like a doorman, looking at Ning Chu.
“I hate you like this…” Ning Chu murmured under her breath as she bent down to get into the car. “Get your act together.”
Wen Yang paused for a moment, then smiled bitterly and nodded.
The ride was silent. Ning Chu arrived back at the girls’ dormitory, glanced back at Wen Yang waiting a distance away, and dashed inside.
“Ning Chu! How was the date?!”
As soon as she opened her dorm room door, Yan Xinya, all excited, came rushing over, her tail wagging furiously, her eyes sparkling.
“Did he confess to you?! Did you agree?!”
So it was you who egged him on…
I told you, Wen Yang doesn’t have the guts to confess.
Ning Chu helplessly pushed the excited Wolf Girl’s face away and headed straight to the bathroom. “I’m changing clothes. Can you stop meddling in my business with Wen Yang?”
“Sounds not too good~ What’s up?”
“I rejected him. He seems to be in a bad mood.”
“You rejected him?!”
“I don’t like him. I’ve said it countless times.”
Yan Xinya finally realized she was in the wrong, her tail stiffening, ears perked up. “You’re not just being stubborn? And your attitude towards him…”
Ning Chu quickly changed back into boy’s clothes, took off her hairpins, and left the bathroom, hurriedly heading out. “So don’t meddle! I’m going, Wen Yang is still waiting for me.”
Watching her hurry away, Yan Xinya turned to Lily lying on the bed.
“Stop playing, we really did something bad~”
Lily poked her flushed face out of the covers and protested, “It’s you!”
“But I think when Ning Chu rejected Wen Yang, she was just acting tough~ Look at how she can’t be away from him for a second.”
“Don’t meddle.”
“Fine~”
…
“I can’t believe it! You two went out on a date this afternoon! The entire school was looking for you!”
As soon as Ning Chu returned to the dorm, she heard Zhang Shaoqing’s loud voice.
Ning Chu yawned and leaned on her desk, too lazy to respond.
“Hey! Wen Yang!” Zhang Shaoqing turned to Wen Yang but froze mid-sentence. “What’s up? You don’t look too happy?”
He leaned closer, nudging Wen Yang’s shoulder playfully. “You look just like when I was heartbroken~ Did you get rejected by a girl? Or did you see your crush going into a hotel with an old man?”
“You two were missing all afternoon. You must be… confessing to Ning Chu? Or maybe that Wolf Girl? Seems like Ning Chu isn’t good at playing wingman.”
His annoying tone and expression made Wen Yang clench his fists.
Ning Chu turned around and glared at Zhang Shaoqing. “You noticed he’s in a bad mood and still tease him! Are you itching for a fight?”
“I’m just trying to lighten things up for Wen Yang, you know what I mean!”
Zhang Shaoqing hooked his arm around Wen Yang’s shoulder. “How about some drinks tonight?”
“No thanks.”
“Come on~ I’ll treat!”
Wen Yang lowered his head, transferred money on his phone. “I still owe over a hundred bucks. I’m working part-time this weekend and will pay you back on Monday.”
“We’re brothers, no rush.”
Wang Jie ended a game and turned to see Wen Yang’s dazed expression, then glanced at Ning Chu, who was usually the nosy one but was now quietly resting her head on the desk. He scratched his head, feeling like something was off between them.
A guess popped into his mind.
“Hey, you guys didn’t have a falling out, did you?”
Wen Yang had no idea if he could even stay friends after this confession.
But Ning Chu immediately retorted, “No way! Wen Yang rarely gets mad. How could he argue with me?”
“Then why does it feel so weird between you two?”
“I’m annoyed too~”
She sorrowfully rested her upper body on the desk, her face pressed against the surface.
Wen Yang couldn’t stay in this downcast state.
Seeing him like this was frustrating for her; he didn’t resemble her confident male lead at all.
And it was heart-wrenching~
“Wen Yang, I’ve got your drink ready. Let’s have something small and chat about it?” Zhang Shaoqing said, then turned to Ning Chu, “Last time you were so active when I was heartbroken, now you’re just sulking on the desk. Want me to be your caring big sister?”
Ning Chu shot him a glare, then climbed onto her bed. “I’m going to sleep.”
“You two usually seem so close. What’s going on?” Zhang Shaoqing muttered, glancing at Wen Yang. “Did you really have a fight?”
“No.”
Zhang Shaoqing finally felt the same frustration Ning Chu had when she was trying to console him before. “So what’s going on?! I can’t stand this! You’re not treating me like a brother, huh?”
Wen Yang shook his head, troubled. “I just don’t know how to explain.”
“Start from the beginning?” Wang Jie pulled up a chair, ready to listen to the story.
“Uh…” Wen Yang stole a glance at Ning Chu lying on the bed, then walked toward the balcony.
The three of them huddled together on the balcony, the back door closed. Ning Chu perched on the edge of her bed, straining her ears to listen carefully.
She wanted to know why Wen Yang fell apart after just one confession. How could he be so fragile inside?
It was totally inconsistent with the character setup in the book!
“He got rejected.”
Faintly, she could hear Wen Yang’s voice.
“Then just confess again after a while! Go for it! Even if that girl is in a relationship, try your best to steal her away!”
“Isn’t stealing someone else’s girl bad? Didn’t you…?”
“Hey, this is about Wen Yang! Why bring me into it?”
“But I…”
The voices dwindled, and Ning Chu anxiously leaned further over her bed, almost falling off the edge, trying to get closer to the balcony.
Still couldn’t hear clearly!
She would have to ask Zhang Shaoqing later!
Hopefully, Wen Yang wouldn’t accidentally spill the beans about her.

Thinking hard… How to make Ning Chu accept him?
