Chapter 561. On the Road Together
A disturbing alarm clock woke Ning Chu from her slumber.
Opening her eyes, she felt a sturdy arm wrapped around her waist, a solid chest pressed tightly to her back, radiating Wen Yang’s warmth.
Reaching out, she silenced her phone’s alarm but rolled back into the comfort of sleep, savoring the peaceful morning.
“Are we not getting up?”
Wen Yang’s deep, resonant voice came from behind her.
“Are we leaving…?”
“Should I come back next National Day if there’s a break?”
Ning Chu shifted back a bit, pressing closer to Wen Yang, but her bottom was getting quite hot.
Not paying too much attention to the early morning intimacy, she sighed softly, “I don’t want to go to work~”
Just like when they were in school, after a long vacation, she felt a strong reluctance to attend classes, lazily wanting to become a salted fish instead.
“Wen Yang, you’re the male lead! Other male leads are either tech pioneers, global tycoons, or at least saving the world…”
“Who told you to write a little emperor story?”
“Yeah, I really regret it.”
If only she had written something more uplifting back then; why did she fill her head with GHS nonsense? And even got herself involved!
Spinning around, she buried her head into Wen Yang’s chest, greedily inhaling his scent.
How could the Ning Chu from a few years ago ever believe that this enchanting succubus would be her future?
Never would she have imagined that her short-term plan involved spicy encounters with a man, while her long-term plan entailed marriage and children…
Back then, she really didn’t like kids, couldn’t tolerate close contact with men, despised becoming more feminine and resented her female traits.
How did it end up like this?
She had practically fallen to the lowest depths of femininity with no way to climb back up.
“But it’s actually pretty good this way.”
Compared to her past life of solitude, Ning Chu was very satisfied with the present, even willing to burn incense for the “god” who brought her into this world.
Suddenly, there was a loud knocking on the door.
“Big sister and brother-in-law! Mom says it’s time to get up!”
“Coming!”
“Why lock the door~?”
Stretching lazily, Ning Chu got up from Wen Yang’s embrace, hopping off the bed barefoot, and ran to open the door.
As soon as the door swung open, Hei Dou frowned and took a step back, wrinkling her nose.
Seeing Hei Dou’s reaction made Ning Chu’s cheeks uncontrollably flush, but she waved her hand nonchalantly and shooed, “Go eat first, Wen Yang and I still need to wash our faces and brush our teeth.”
Hei Dou, as if ignoring her words, curiously peeked into the room.
The bed sheets and blankets were a bit rumpled, Wen Yang was sitting at the head of the bed yawning, but the seductive scent was clearly not emanating from the bed.
“Sis, there’s a really strange smell~”
Ning Chu already knew Hei Dou’s true identity, but that naive gaze always left her feeling exceedingly embarrassed. She yanked on Hei Dou’s cat ears, scolding, “Stop learning useless things! Out, out!”
“Oh~”
After sending Hei Dou away, she turned to open the window for ventilation, complaining, “This cat just loves to tease me, wanting to see me embarrassed.”
Clearly, she understood everything yet still asked!
“Just ventilate everything.”
“Take the duvet cover off and toss it in the washing machine.”
“Okay.”
After taking the duvet cover off with Wen Yang and tossing it into the washing machine, Ning Chu finally felt relieved and headed to the bathroom to freshen up.
Ning Yuan and Uncle had left the day before, preparing only four breakfasts at the dining table.
Early in the morning, her mother had just finished cooking and was busy sweeping and mopping the floor. The ceramic tiles were always spotless, and everything was tidy and orderly under her mother’s diligent care.
According to her mother’s standards, being a full-time housewife made Ning Chu feel like she’d rather be working.
She was quite slothful and only cleaned the rental apartment once a week with Wen Yang.
“Where’s your shoes? I just mopped the floor!”
After washing up and stepping out of the bathroom, Ning Chu had taken just two steps before being met with her mother’s displeased reprimand.
She turned to glance at the footprint she left on the floor and sheepishly ran to her bedroom to put on slippers.
“Ning Xin! Put on your shoes!”
“You both are nothing but trouble! Can’t you learn something good from your sister?”
It was hectic from the get-go, but Wen Yang had already gotten accustomed to such scenes. He actually found it quite warm and familial.
“Wen Yang, have you packed your things?”
He tensed up reflexively, “I packed it last night.”
“Don’t forget the clothes drying on the balcony.” Her mother put down the mop and walked to the kitchen, “I bought some things for you to take; doesn’t Ning Chu like the crispy edges of hot pot? I special-ordered some.”
“That half-finished product can be bought online.”
“I got it from a friend; it tastes better than what’s online.”
Wen Yang helplessly followed her into the kitchen, watching his mother-in-law pull out packages from the fridge, “Isn’t that a bit too much?”
“This mixed noodle is great; you both can have it for breakfast, and this drink is all natural with no additives, good for your health… Don’t keep eating takeout outside; it’s greasy and salty and unsanitary. Learn to cook when you have time.”
“Hey, when are you two going to give me a grandson? The sooner, the better; I’m still young enough to help you out.”
“Mom… didn’t you say you didn’t want to take care of kids anymore?”
“Well, if you really have kids, how could I not help? You both are so busy with work and trying to save up for a house.”
Wen Yang smiled wryly, overwhelmed with the hefty load of food and drink he was unsure how to carry away.
He increasingly felt that his mother-in-law genuinely regarded him as family, treating him like a son.
“I knew it! Once we’re married, you’d definitely start pestering for grandkids!” Ning Chu exclaimed as she ran over, face filled with disdain. “Mom, save some of this for Hei Dou! How are we supposed to carry so much?”
“Carry as much as you can; what time is your train?”
“Soon, we just need to eat and then leave.”
Hei Dou, who followed behind Ning Chu, drooped her ears, “Are we leaving in such a hurry…?”
“Why don’t you stay and keep your sister company? Just look at how sad she is.” Her mother joked, “Letting Wen Yang go to work alone is enough.”
“That won’t do! What if he strays without me watching?”
Wen Yang rubbed his nose, murmuring, “I’m not that kind of person.”
“I see you can’t live without a man.” Her mother shot a sideways glance at Ning Chu.
I mean, come on! What succubus can live without a man?
Ning Chu retorted silently and dragged Hei Dou over to the dining table for breakfast.
It was barely eight in the morning, yet there was only an hour left until departure. Worried about being late, Ning Chu and Wen Yang hurriedly devoured their food.
Usually such a foodie, Hei Dou had little appetite left, stirring her soy milk with a spoon while her mother endlessly chattered at the dining table, oblivious to whether the departing couple was really listening.
“Mom, how about you drive us to the station?”
Hei Dou immediately chimed in, “Yes!”
“Yeah, right! You still need to go to your tutoring class! Look at your grades!”
“Oh~”
Ning Chu set down her bowl and rubbed Hei Dou’s droopy cat head sympathetically, “So, are we heading out?”
“Eat a bit more?”
“I’m worried we’ll be late; it’s safer to leave early.”
“Be careful on the road.”
“Isn’t Wen Yang here? No need to worry.”
Wen Yang smiled and nodded, “I’m here; don’t worry.”
He picked up the luggage he’d left by the table. Coming back had only been one big backpack stuffed with clothes, but now it included a suitcase filled with food and miscellaneous items.
Ning Chu only carried a small shoulder bag, lightly following behind Wen Yang as they walked towards the entrance.
“If there’s no overtime during the National Day, I’ll come back.”
She changed her shoes and turned to glance back at her still-seated mother and the kitty trailing close behind.
“Leaving now, bye~”
“Bye bye!”
Up ahead lay an endless routine of working and making money, a thought that felt quite dull.
Ning Chu lifted her head, looking at Wen Yang waiting in the hallway ahead, her face breaking into a tender smile as she jogged to catch up.
Thank goodness she had company on this journey.
