Chapter 548

Chapter 550. Opposition

“Mom! Hei Dou! I’m back!”

After just a day and night at Lily’s house, Ning Chu returned home the next evening.

With the year-end holidays, she had only taken six days off, and needed to make a quick trip back. She planned to spend the sixth day of her holiday lounging around in her rental, living like a salted fish and getting some good rest.

“Sister, Brother-in-law!”

As soon as she shouted, a gust of wind rushed towards her. She quickly steadied herself and took the full brunt of Hei Dou’s collision.

“Ow~ That hurts…”

She suspected that in a few years, Hei Dou might just be able to knock her flying.

“Brother-in-law! Did you bring any goodies?” Hei Dou hugged her waist while leaning to peek at Wen Yang, who was still standing outside the door.

“Uh… I forgot.”

Upon hearing this dreadful news, her pupils dilated in disbelief, and she took a step back: “Then I want to sleep in the same room as Sister tonight! I haven’t seen her in forever.”

Wen Yang twitched his lips and cast a questioning glance at Ning Chu.

“When she came back for the New Year, she insisted on sleeping with me, so I had to bribe her with food…”

Who knew that this little cat would learn so fast?

Ning Chu sighed gloomily: “You should go buy something downstairs.”

These past few days were spent either at a hotel or at Lily’s house, and she had been on edge, barely eating enough. This demoness was almost starving to skin and bones, leaving her feeling lethargic and looking unwell, with even a tiny pimple popping up on her chin.

Now that she was finally home, wasn’t it time to feast?

“Okay, I remember there’s a place at the entrance of the community that sells egg burgers.” Wen Yang just took off his shoes, only to bend down and put them back on again, “Hei Dou, do you want some?”

“Want! Two!”

“Then wait for me for ten minutes. Don’t close the door just yet.”

Just then, their mother emerged from the bedroom, having overheard. She shot a glare at Hei Dou: “You’re going to be a pig before long.”

“Impossible~”

“Stop standing around at the door. Should I make you something to eat?”

“Mom, there’s something I want to discuss with you.”

Ning Chu stopped her mother, who was about to head to the kitchen, slipped on her slippers, and hurried in front of her.

“What’s up?”

Her mother stopped in confusion and looked at her daughter.

Ning Chu’s face was evidently flushed, and she nervously avoided her mother’s gaze, stuttering, “I want… to find a time to get the marriage certificate with Wen Yang.”

“So fast?”

“It’s been four years, isn’t that a bit long?”

Unknowingly, they had been dating for four years, most of which they had spent living together. Although they were still technically just a couple, it didn’t differ much from being husband and wife—the only difference being that piece of paperwork.

That’s what she thought, but her mother furrowed her brows, and even Hei Dou looked up curiously.

“What’s wrong?”

Their mother didn’t rush to the kitchen anymore and sat at the dining table instead: “Have you thought about what Wen Yang has right now? He can’t even afford a wedding for you.”

“He’s saved nearly a hundred thousand already; he can manage the wedding…”

“What about a house? You plan to live in a rental with him?”

“That can wait~ A rental is fine; we can change it anytime.”

Although her mother was somewhat satisfied with Wen Yang, the thought of him not having a house, a car, or money but still wanting to marry her daughter left her uneasy.

Isn’t that just like trying to catch a wolf by hand?

Her gentle smile gradually disappeared, replaced by a serious expression: “Have you thought about what would happen if you two break up?”

Ning Chu shook her head vigorously.

“If you’re not married, you can split up anytime. But if you get married, it’ll be a lot harder to separate later.”

“With your conditions, it wouldn’t be hard to find someone better looking and wealthier than Wen Yang, but if you become a divorcée…”

She interrupted her mother, “Mom, it’s not like I plan to break up with him!”

“What if? You think you’ll be tied to him for life?”

“Yep!”

That resolute reply left her mother speechless. She stared at her daughter’s stubborn yet determined little face, momentarily seeing a reflection of her younger self.

It was almost identical…

Caught in a frenzy, despite having good conditions, she insisted on marrying a broke guy.

No matter how family and friends advised against it, she was unwavering in her conviction about him.

She shook her head, helplessly covering her face: “How come you’re just as stubborn as I was back then…”

“Well, you raised me well~ Besides, you just met the wrong guy. What sort of person disappears for twenty years after a fight and shows no responsibility?”

“I also thought like that back then. And what happened then?”

“If I can do it, why can’t I…”

Her mother earnestly tried to persuade her: “If I had listened to my family’s advice, would I have ended up in my forties, raising you two and finally settling down?”

Ning Chu hung her head low. She knew how hard her mother had it in her early years and understood that her mother just didn’t want her to follow the same path, murmuring quietly, “It’s different…”

“Marriage isn’t about romance; it’s not just about finding someone you love to spend your life with. Are you silly?”

“What else could it be?”

Knowing she couldn’t convince her mother, she retorted but didn’t linger to listen further, turning and walking away, dejected.

Hei Dou, at a loss, looked at her sister’s retreating figure and then up at their worried mother.

“What did they fight about… Sister just got home.”

“It’s not a fight. Go keep her company; I’ll make you both a late-night snack.”

Their mother stood up helplessly, sighed, and turned toward the kitchen. But after a few steps, she strode quickly to the master bedroom.

Sure enough, she found Ning Chu sneaking around in her room, rummaging through her drawers.

“Ning Chu! What are you doing in my room?”

“Ah?” Ning Chu startled, almost sitting on the floor, looked up in shock, and quickly stuttered, “Mom, I thought Uncle was home, so I wanted to ask him for some advice.”

“I’ve used that excuse before.”

Her mother kicked her lightly in the backside: “Out!”

“That hurts! I really came to find Uncle!”

Ning Chu covered her behind, muttering as she hastily escaped the bedroom.

Wen Yang happened to return with egg burgers and saw her being chased into the living room, confused, “What’s going on? You just got home and are already causing a ruckus.”

“Nothing!”

Ning Chu angrily turned and retreated into her room.

It’s not that she blamed Wen Yang for being so useless, but rather herself for not making the protagonist a rich second-generation while writing her novels—any ordinary working-class family would do.

If he were a rich second-generation, her mother would’ve been happily pushing her into Wen Yang’s arms by now, right?

“???”

“Sister argued with Mom!” Hei Dou dashed over, “Brother-in-law~ Burger~”

Wen Yang handed the egg burger to Hei Dou and coaxed, “Here, tell me what they fought about.”

“I want that too…” Hei Dou eagerly stared at the soda in Wen Yang’s hand.

“That’s for your sister.”

“Then I won’t tell you!”

Hei Dou scampered off to the living room to watch TV.

Although he could coax some details out of Hei Dou, Wen Yang hesitated for a moment, pushed open the door to the guest room, and looked at Ning Chu, who was sulking inside.

After all, comforting his little demoness was the most important thing.
