Chapter 536. Night
In fact, with Ning Chu’s current looks, she had a significant advantage when job hunting.
She typically didn’t wear much makeup and her outfits weren’t particularly exquisite, but even so, she could still attract most people’s attention while walking down the street. Although she wasn’t very tall, her slender figure made her look like she had stepped straight out of a comic.
Whether it was a receptionist, a model, or a live streamer… during her job search, similar opportunities often popped up in her private messages.
However, having once been a man, she had no interest in jobs that required flaunting her appearance and relying on her looks to make a living.
She hated the lewd gazes men directed at her; while walking down the street, she could usually ignore them unless they were particularly obvious, but working was a different matter.
Just a little over half a month had passed, and Wen Yang’s work had gotten on track, making Ning Chu anxious.
Usually, she would take her time in the morning, straighten her sheets and blankets, and tidy up the mess from the previous night before heading out for an interview in the afternoon. Now, she was running around all day long, regardless of the time.
“Maybe I should just become a customer service rep… not working isn’t an option.”
Finishing her day’s rush just before the evening rush hour, Ning Chu returned to her rented room, sat at the desk, and scroll through her phone, talking to herself in frustration.
“The salary seems acceptable, nine to six shouldn’t require much overtime, and I wouldn’t have to face customers directly.”
She always felt nervous when dealing with strangers, and customer service just needed to handle phone calls and type away on a keyboard—perfect for her as a keyboard warrior.
“And there isn’t too much specialization, there’s training when starting.”
It’s just that, let’s be honest, customer service could also be described as a punching bag.
Ning Chu slumped over the desk, lazily burying half her face in a pillow while browsing the welfare, benefits, and requirements for customer service positions across various companies.
As the surroundings gradually dimmed and her stomach began to protest with growls, she suddenly realized, looking up at the window. The sky outside had turned fully dark, and the city had lit up with brilliant lights, but Wen Yang still hadn’t returned.
“He usually comes back by six-thirty at the latest…”
Wen Yang usually finishes work at five-thirty and can get home in half an hour by subway.
Surely, there couldn’t be any traffic on the subway, right?
Ning Chu got up to turn on the lights in the room and listened carefully to the footsteps coming from the hallway, pursing her lips in disappointment.
That footstep wasn’t Wen Yang’s, she could tell.
She looked down at her phone and noticed that Wen Yang had sent her a message at five o’clock to inform her.
“There’s a company gathering tonight; I might be back a bit late. Remember to eat early.”
Because of some mild obsessive-compulsive tendencies and unable to stand seeing red notification dots on her software, she had turned off her notification settings, which led to her only seeing it now.
“Got it, come home early.”
After replying, Ning Chu didn’t feel like going downstairs. She stretched and laid back on the bed, raising her phone to search for nearby takeout.
“I suddenly don’t feel hungry…”
She couldn’t find any takeout she wanted, and her hunger had disappeared. She tossed her phone onto the bedside, covering her forehead with the back of her hand as she stared blankly at the dim yellow light.
With Wen Yang not home, she found herself at a loss for what to do.
Usually, she’d share a cramped desk with Wen Yang during dinner, exchanging funny stories or grievances from the day, then play a couple of gaming sessions together.
Around eight or nine o’clock, she would sit at the head of the bed, typing away while dealing with Wen Yang’s interruptions, and in rare situations, she’d be so annoyed she put down her laptop, raised her hips, and begged him for mercy.
When it got to eleven or twelve, she’d wash up and go to bed, and Wen Yang would start his serious advances, no begging would help until her mind crashed.
An exceptionally fulfilling night like this would pass, not only in life but also in her belly.
However, tonight was so boring~
Without Wen Yang around, not only did Ning Chu lose her appetite, but even the thought of gaming or typing flew out of her mind. She felt slack, as if she had lost all her bones and couldn’t muster any energy.
She had been thinking about telling Wen Yang about the bizarre companies she encountered today, the supermarket sales announcements, and the tasty snack she had sneaked a bite of…
With a sigh, she rolled back and forth across the bed a couple of times, finally just flopping face down on her chest, like a dead fish.
“……”
The door creaked open, and Wen Yang, smelling of smoke and alcohol, quietly stepped into the room. He instinctively lightened his footsteps.
He softly closed and locked the door, standing by the bed, looking at Ning Chu who was sprawled across the bed asleep.
The little demoness’s sleeping posture was hard to describe; she was still wearing her usual clothes, but her hem was all askew, revealing her rising belly and silver stripes. Her feet dangled off the bed, with one hand cradling her mountainous chest and the other clutching her corner.
“Not even under the blanket, clothes still on, and shoes haven’t been taken off.”
Wen Yang helplessly put down his briefcase, crouched down, and carefully helped Ning Chu take off her shoes.
Her slender tail, shaped like a heart, quietly wrapped around his wrist.
“Awake?”
“Hmm… how did I fall asleep?”
Her raspy and groggy voice sounded particularly cute, making Wen Yang chuckle: “You must have been too tired?”
“Not really, just waiting for you, I dozed off.” Ning Chu arched her back, lifting her torso a few inches, letting out a soft moan, “Ah~ What time is it~”
“Just past nine.”
“Back so late…”
“A lot of people are still singing karaoke. I had a few drinks before coming back.”
She abruptly flipped over to sit up but almost bumped into Wen Yang’s stomach. She awkwardly averted her gaze and scooted over a bit, wrinkling her nose in disgust: “You smell of smoke and alcohol… how much did you drink? Were there girls with you?”
“I didn’t drink much; look, my face isn’t even red.”
“The point is girls!”
“I was with a monk group…” Wen Yang tried to defend himself, but the little demoness had already leaned closer, sniffing him. He had no choice but to confess, “They called over a few girls to join us for drinks, but I ran back.”
Ning Chu did smell a hint of perfume on him and turned her head away in dissatisfaction: “I waited so long I ended up falling asleep, and you were out there partying…”
“It was just dinner; we went to karaoke for a bit.”
Honestly, her discontent wasn’t really about Wen Yang hanging out with other girls; such things were unavoidable, and Wen Yang had done quite well.
The real issue was being left alone at home!
“I’m cold and hungry, all alone at home~”
She dramatically rubbed her eyes, and fresh tears instantly sprang forth from her still-sleepy tear ducts, falling down her cheeks.
Wen Yang immediately panicked: “No, I won’t go next time; I’ll stay home and accompany you…”
“You better at least carry me to win three rounds to be forgiven~”
“……”
His hand, which had just reached out for an embrace, froze mid-air. He looked speechlessly at Ning Chu and laughed softly, rolling his eyes before turning to head to the restroom.
“No! I’m still not forgiving you!”
“I’ll wash my face; if we don’t win three rounds tonight, I won’t go to bed.”
Ning Chu dashed to the restroom door, poking her head in: “Don’t affect tomorrow’s work, okay~”
“It’s fine; anyway, you can’t handle three rounds.”
“I meant in the game!”
Wen Yang feigned ignorance, raising his head: “Right, so did I; winning one round will take until dawn, and you’ll have long gone to sleep by then.”
