Chapter 633. On Staples and Seasonings
“Why are you back so late? The food is already cold.”
“I told you not to wait for me.”
Ning Chu, draped in a sun protection coat, wearily pushed the door open. Upon seeing Wen Yang approaching, her legs gave way, and she tumbled into his embrace.
“Wen Yang~”
She called out pitifully, causing Wen Yang to gently stroke her little head and the tips of her hair.
“What’s wrong?”
Leaning against his solid chest, in the next moment, her previously delicate and spoiled demeanor shifted as she cursed, “Damn it, I ran to three interviews this afternoon and got ghosted once! I’m so exhausted in this scorching heat!”
“I told you to take it easy, slow down.”
“Well, I have nothing to do at home, so I might as well go for interviews.”
Ning Chu got up from Wen Yang’s arms, took off her sun protection coat, casually tossed her bag onto the bed, and plopped down at the head of the bed, spreading her legs carelessly, not caring if she showed anything.
The tail coiled around her thigh also relaxed, poking out from under her skirt to hook onto her slippers at the door, dragging them over to her feet with great effort.
She ripped the hair tie out of her ponytail, her hair cascading down like a waterfall, kicked off her sandals, and flopped back onto the bed, whining, “Ahhh~ I’m going crazy~ Do you know what? During the interviews, I bumped into a master’s grad from a 985 university! Ridiculous! If they weren’t stupid, they wouldn’t pick me! What on earth are these high-achievers competing with me for?”
“Though, when I passed by a gym, I saw they were hiring yoga instructors. I’ve practiced for a few years; maybe I should give it a shot? Plus, I’ll get to see pretty girls every day~”
“My yoga teacher used to praise me all the time back in school! Said I was super diligent and it was clear I stretched every day.”
Wen Yang thought that he hadn’t seen Ning Chu do any stretching, but then he realized he had likely been helping her stretch daily.
On most days, it would be two or three times, and even less on others, isn’t that diligent?
After patiently listening to Ning Chu’s endless complaints for a few minutes, he finally smiled and said, “I’m off tomorrow.”
Her frowning face froze for a moment, then quickly transformed into surprise. Ning Chu jumped up from the bed, “Then let’s go out! HR won’t be working on the weekend anyway, right?”
“Since I came here, I’ve only been job hunting or staying at home. I haven’t had a good time!”
Wen Yang’s eyes brimmed with warmth as he called to the little demoness, “Come eat, let’s talk while we eat.”
“Coming, coming!”
Ning Chu eagerly shuffled her chair closer, bumping shoulders with Wen Yang, excitedly opening the now-cold takeaway box.
The single desk was a bit cramped, making it feel even more crowded as they sat together. Without enough space to stretch their limbs, she didn’t care, happily leaning against Wen Yang’s shoulder, wagging her tail joyfully.
While eating, she kept asking about their plans for the next day: “How about we go watch a match? An e-sports match! I’ve only seen it live-streamed before; it’s so lively in the crowd~”
Wen Yang didn’t mind where they went, as long as he was with Ning Chu, nodding his head repeatedly, “Sure, just set a time, and I’ll buy the tickets online.”
“Mhm! We’ll watch the match in the afternoon and then stroll along the Bund at night? I heard the view of the Huangpu River is amazing! A must-see for sightseers!”
“Those restaurants over there are probably really expensive?”
“Yeah! We can just grab some snacks elsewhere before we go.”
“Once I have money, I’ll take you out for a nice meal, okay?”
Ning Chu shook her head rapidly, “No way! People who eat at places like that are just big fools; I feel for them when I see those food vloggers online.”
After a few bites, she finally realized, “How much was dinner today?”
“Forty-three.”
“So expensive… You bought too much meat; next time get some more veggies to save a bit.”
She reached for her bag on the bed, took out her phone, and noted today’s expenses in her memo app. Then she frowned, opening her calculator.
Wen Yang helplessly interrupted her, “Don’t calculate; just eat.”
“I can’t! Just counting the food, I’ve spent nearly a hundred today. If this continues for a month, that’s three thousand just for food, and there’s still the two thousand five for rent,” Ning Chu grumbled, her brow even more furrowed, “And I haven’t counted water, electricity, phone bills, transport fees, and life essentials yet; this month is going to hit seven or eight thousand.”
“But your salary isn’t even that high; you’ll have some left once you get confirmed.”
In just a few days, she had transformed from a big spender using her family’s money to support her boyfriend to a meticulous manager of daily necessities.
Wen Yang sighed and explained, “Just eating out can easily cost over twenty bucks, and that’s without much meat.”
“Your company is pretty big; why don’t you have a cafeteria? How about skipping the match tomorrow? There’s nothing really to see.”
He couldn’t help but roll his eyes at Ning Chu, “Are we really at that point? I’ve still got a few thousand saved up, and you should too.”
“We have to be prepared for any situation~ I can’t keep asking my family for money,” Ning Chu sighed, “I don’t want to keep track of this; it’s such a hassle.”
But Wen Yang, clearly from a poor background, spent lavishly, and if she didn’t help manage things, they’d end up owing money by the time the New Year rolled around.
Today, he mentioned taking her to a fancy restaurant, yesterday he asked if she wanted a new bag, and the day before that, he brought back a twenty-buck cup of milk tea… although she enjoyed that milk tea quite a bit.
“I’m full; I’m going to type now for perfect attendance.”
Ning Chu patted her moderately full belly, stretching before getting up.
“Are we still going to watch the match tomorrow?”
“This…” She picked up her laptop, revealing a hesitant expression.
Wen Yang understood this was the moment he needed to make a decision, so he confirmed, “Alright, I’ll buy the ticket; let’s go for the cheapest ticket to experience the atmosphere.”
“How much is it?”
“One hundred fifty.”
“That’s a bit pricey, isn’t it…”
“Just this once, don’t think about whether it’s cheap or expensive; it’s on me.”
That flickering willpower quickly wavered, and Ning Chu mumbled, “Your money is basically my money anyway…”
“Alright, go type.”
She felt a slap on her butt, blushing furiously as she turned to glare at Wen Yang before quickly climbing onto the bed with her laptop, leaning against the headboard and placing the laptop on her thighs.
The rental apartment was small, and with only one desk, she had to type on her bed.
But after a while, she found this more comfortable than sitting at a desk; at least without the mouse and keyboard, she wouldn’t be so tempted to play games randomly.
“Wen Yang, do you like boys or girls?”
However, after just writing two lines, Ning Chu lost focus, setting the laptop aside and cross-legged, gazing at Wen Yang still eating.
Wen Yang answered without hesitating, “I only like you, no matter if you’re a boy or a girl.”
God knows why this little demoness is always so concerned about her past gender.
“I meant kids that you like…”
He paused awkwardly, looking back at Ning Chu on the bed, only to see that her enchanting eyes held less charm and more longing and maternal instincts: “Aren’t you the one who didn’t want kids? Afraid of the pain and dislikes children?”
“I was just asking casually.”
“A boy, right? Girls will likely be demonesses too; thinking about it gives me a headache.”
“Mhm! I think so too! But boys can be so rowdy and bear, it’s annoying!” Ning Chu complained angrily, “My brother and I were such brats when we were kids, always getting into trouble; if I had a kid, I’d probably break their legs!”
Wen Yang looked at her troubled state and joked, “Why don’t we create a person tonight?”
Ning Chu’s face flushed bright red, shaking her head frantically.
“Absolutely not! And it’s the safe period right now!”
“Isn’t that even better?”
“Eh~ It really makes my stomach feel heavy…”
