Chapter 489. Mountain Support
Dad’s back?
Ning Chu stumbled back into the living room and slumped onto the sofa, staring blankly.
For a moment, she couldn’t quite put her chaotic emotions into words. Panic, resentment, fear, anger? They all seemed to blend together, leaving her mind in a whirlwind.
Since she could remember, her mind had never pictured a father.
Her brother might have seen him, but he probably didn’t have much of an impression.
Ning Chu curled up her legs, resting her chin on her knees, her eyes filled with confusion and helplessness.
Before she crossed over, she hadn’t heard a word about her father’s return through the entire college experience, yet here she was, in the second semester of her freshman year, and suddenly, Dad showed up.
Her previously calm and upward life was suddenly disrupted by a stone thrown into the water, creating ripples.
She instinctively wanted to escape, thinking about hiding at school. She resented her father for ruining her peaceful life and thought about not returning home for a while, waiting for him to leave first…
But she was also curious and somewhat blindly hopeful about who this father she had never met really was.
With a single phone call, Ning Chu’s emotions turned strange, making the few people present worry a bit.
Yan Xinya, straightforward and without reservation, plopped down beside Ning Chu. “What’s wrong? Something happened?”
“Uh… family stuff.” Ning Chu shook her head. “Shouldn’t be a big deal, right?”
She wasn’t quite sure what her father’s return would mean for the family.
Yan Xinya tilted her head like a big dog. “Are you going back now?”
“Let’s see?”
“Then don’t think too much! Let’s go have fun camping and consider other things afterwards!” Wolf Girl grinned, showing her teeth. “What’s the point of thinking about other stuff while having fun?”
“Mm.”
This group was more outgoing thanks to Yan Xinya’s personality. The other girls could only glance at each other with worry, while Wen Yang, understanding her character, didn’t pry further at the moment.
The cheerful atmosphere had been slightly dampened, but Wen Yang’s phone rang.
This time it was Zhang Shaoqing and Qian Qian, asking them to let the elevator swipe the card to their floor.
The hassle of having a single entrance per floor was just this—without the right card, friends and relatives couldn’t go upstairs at all.
“The card’s on the shoe rack by the entrance.”
“Okay.” Wen Yang tucked his phone away and stood up, but before leaving, he turned to Ning Chu and asked, “Want to come? We could swing by the supermarket for some snacks?”
“Then I’ll go change…”
Ning Chu was still in that short, saggy spaghetti strap nightgown that barely covered her backside, but she threw on Wen Yang’s baggy jacket. The hem of the jacket was longer than the dress, so there was technically no risk of exposing herself, but she still felt a bit shy.
In just a few minutes, she changed into a white shirt and plaid skirt, slipping on thick stockings and jogged out of the guest room.
Catching up to Wen Yang, she grabbed the elevator card, and the two stepped into the elevator.
Ning Chu’s brows knitted together, letting out a troubled sigh as she leaned against the elevator wall.
In the enclosed space, without anyone else around, she felt even more fragile and sensitive than before. Her pretty face was overshadowed with clouds, making Wen Yang’s heart ache.
“Wanna talk about it?”
Wen Yang faced away, watching the numbers slowly descend in the elevator.
“My dad suddenly just popped back.”
This news stunned him as well.
Once Ning Chu opened her mouth, there was no stopping her; she whined, “It’s been almost twenty years. He hasn’t even called in all that time. Is he alive or dead? What does he want now?”
“He’s never been a dad, never fulfilled his husband duties… We were so poor back then that if it weren’t for Grandpa frequently helping us, my mom working away from home, my brother and I would have starved to death.”
“If someone didn’t know better, they’d think we were a single-parent family.”
“Maybe he’s run out of money and wants to come back to swindle my mom? He probably has another wife and kids somewhere.”
“If he sees his son turned into a girl… serves him right! And then my mom can finalize the divorce without going to court.”
Wen Yang just listened to Ning Chu vent, not interrupting her outpouring of feelings.
“You won’t end up like him in the future…”
“Me? No way.” Wen Yang shook his head with a smile. “It’s not like I’m sick like that aunt… You think I look sick?”
His teasing lightened Ning Chu’s outrage, causing her to shy away from Wen Yang’s gaze, her face flushed as she mumbled, “Like a monster, even a succubus can’t handle you…”
Thank goodness she’s a succubus; a regular human would probably pass out trying to eat!
Unlike now, where even if she ends up in pain, after a good sleep, she’ll mostly be fine.
“Who told me to be your main character in your writing? I’ll deal with my own mess.”
“Tsk~”
“Do you want to let another woman…”
“Absolutely not!”
Ning Chu rejected without hesitation, looking up at Wen Yang’s back. “Do you really have that in mind? Hmm?”
“Of course not, I was just joking.”
Wen Yang raised his hands in surrender. After teasing the Little Demoness, he saw her mood improve significantly. He then said seriously, “If he’s returned, he’s back. At least I’m here, right? Whatever happens, I’m here for you.”
“You?”
“At least if it comes to a fight, I can handle anyone you want to punch.”
Ning Chu scoffed derisively, “You’re a college student and still full of violence. Violence doesn’t solve problems.”
“It can solve the person causing the problem.”
“Pfft~”
Ning Chu puffed her cheeks, laughing out loud. She might complain, but having someone reliable felt pretty good~
With Wen Yang’s support, she felt more willing to face this father she had never met before; whatever happened, she knew Wen Yang could handle it.
After all, he was her main character! All-powerful!
Ning Chu understood more and more why she had initially fallen for this man lacking money and power, except for his good looks and skills…
Always facing everything alone, even when she was still a man, she longed for a pair of arms to support her, protect her, and give her the courage and confidence to confront difficulties.
The elevator doors opened, and Zhang Shaoqing and Qian Qian had been waiting at the entrance for a while.
Zhang Shaoqing looked a bit pale, visibly trembling even as he stood there on his weak legs.
Qian Qian, looking revitalized, greeted with a bright smile, “Morning~”
“Morning~”
She dashed into the elevator excitedly, “Today, I’m going to win back all the money I lost!”
Zhang Shaoqing followed with a look of despair, swaying as if he might collapse at any moment. Seeing his weak state reminded Ning Chu of how her father looked before leaving the house.
But one shouldn’t abandon family!
This guy should be able to handle a little she-cat in heat!
“You two head on in, I’ll take Ning Chu to the supermarket for some snacks.”
“Get me a bottle of Red Bull.”
“Call me Dad.” Ning Chu chimed in.
“Mom and Dad~ Please!” Zhang Shaoqing exclaimed.
Wen Yang shook his head with a laugh, clearly noticing that Ning Chu seemed much more lively and cheerful than before.
