Chapter 399

Chapter 401. Reasoning

“Mom!”

“Oh dear~ It’s only been two days and you’re already talking to me like that.

When you get married later, will you even remember me, your mom?”

“……”

After dinner and finishing up my writing, Ning Chu had just dialed her mother’s number when she was met with sarcasm.

For a moment, she didn’t know what to say, her questions stuck in her throat.

“Go on, what’s got you so upset?”

Her tone softened somewhat, but she still couldn’t hide her complaints: “Mom~ why didn’t you tell me I’d grow horns! And that I’d have a false pregnancy before that! You almost scared me to death!”

“You’re pregnant?!”

“False pregnancy! Can you please listen to everything I say?!”

Her mother let out a sigh of relief: “You scared me! If you bring back a grandchild, I’ll break Wen Yang’s legs!”

“I understand that you like to play at your age, but you have to take safety precautions; otherwise, who can raise ten or eight kids?!”

“Back in my day, I learned the hard way. If it weren’t for the accident of having you, things wouldn’t have been so tough at home!”

“You mean……”

Ning Chu leaned on the windowsill of her rented apartment, chin resting on her hand as she gazed out at the pedestrians below, interrupting in despair: “Mom, you’re going off-topic.”

She didn’t call her mother just to hear her nag about education! Plus, after such a scare, she was determined not to be as carefree as before!

Just thinking about the image of a big belly frightened her…

“Oh~ So you’re growing horns?” After a moment of contemplation, her mother asked in confusion, “Have you been to the hospital for a check-up?”

“Yeah, I got checked. I thought I was really pregnant. It scared me!”

“I never grew horns; I thought you wouldn’t either~ Hmm, but you’re still in your developmental stage, so it is possible.”

Normal succubi have a developmental period lasting several years, but Ning Chu was only a little over six months along; to others, she still looked like a pubescent succubus… just a bit older.

Her mother, sounding a bit headachy, said: “I’ve never had horns. I’ll ask your grandma for you, okay?”

“Yeah, ask what I should be careful about…… Also, Mom, won’t the horns poke into the pillow while Grandma sleeps?”

“Probably not?”

“Then… if I grow horns, won’t my head be heavy? That can’t be good for my neck!”

“Will the horns keep growing like a deer’s, and then fall off by themselves after a while?”

“Mom, if I grind down my horns into powder, can I sell it to the pharmacy for some pocket money?”

Ning Chu always had strangely peculiar questions, but most of the time, her mother couldn’t answer them.

After being peppered with questions, her mother’s patience finally wore thin: “I’ll give your grandma a call. You can ask her, I don’t know! I’m not growing horns!”

“Oh…… could you ask for me?” Ning Chu immediately backed down, shrinking her neck and mumbling.

“Hang up!”

She ended the call with a worried sigh, turned around, and looked at Wen Yang, who was focusing on a design at the computer.

Wen Yang had self-taught some design skills and took on a few part-time jobs in the evening to make some extra money— not much, but enough to help with living expenses.

“How is it?”

“Nothing much, my mom doesn’t understand anything.” Ning Chu sat beside Wen Yang, peering at the PS running on the laptop, and asked, “Can you edit a horn onto my photo? I want to see what I’ll look like.”

“Will it be cute?”

“That’d be best……”

She found herself instinctively rubbing her head; ever since she learned she’d be growing horns in the future, she felt a bit itchy, as if a pair of little horns might pop out at any moment.

She hadn’t felt this anxious about growing silver stripes and a tail before.

“I’m going to sleep. I’m so tired……”

Ning Chu, not waiting for Wen Yang to finish editing her photo, sluggishly got up and collapsed face down onto her bed.

Her period had just started, and because she hadn’t snacked last night, she was already feeling drained today. Plus, her emotions were akin to a rollercoaster, which had exhausted a lot of her energy.

Usually, she could stay up until around midnight, but today, just after ten, she was already feeling immensely drowsy.

Class starts at ten tomorrow~ so she could comfortably sleep until nine!

With the lights still on, she curled her legs up, burying her head into the covers, her breathing quickly becoming heavy and steady.

Wen Yang glanced at the bulge in the blanket, got up to turn off the light, but suddenly heard a commotion coming from the corridor.

“Drink! Let’s keep drinking at my place!”

“We won’t stop until we’re wasted! Whoever runs away is a dog!”

“Bang!”

The noise grew louder, the door next door was kicked open with a sudden bang, startling Wen Yang awake.

Ning Chu, already in a light sleep, was instantly jolted awake, hastily emerging from the covers, flustered.

“What’s happening?”

“The neighbors next door are drunk.”

The front door slammed heavily again with another “bang,” making Ning Chu, sitting on the bed, shudder and nearly leap up.

“Crazy people! It’s late at night, making such a racket!”

She cursed under her breath as she lay back down, grumbling: “I’ve seen that neighbor before. He seemed polite and clean, but has no manners at all!”

It was already past ten! It should be quiet time!

But even as the neighbors invited friends inside, the thin walls couldn’t block out their noise, making it sound like they were smashing things, clanging and crashing non-stop.

One might even think the walls were shaking, imagining what on earth they were doing to create such a ruckus.

How could anyone sleep in this noise!

Ning Chu tossed and turned in bed, becoming increasingly agitated, complaining, “It’s already ten-thirty, are they trying to keep us awake?!”

“Ah ah ah~ I’m dying~”

Rolling around in bed like a salted fish, she held onto her pillow for a while without moving or speaking, staring blankly at the wall.

About half an hour later, the noise next door grew louder, as if they were going to tear down the entire building.

“Crazy people~” Ning Chu sighed in despair, “It’s already eleven, isn’t this a bit much?”

“Why isn’t the landlord doing something about it~”

“Hey! Wen Yang, where are you going?”

She noticed Wen Yang putting on his jacket and heading for the door.

“I’m going to remind them next door.”

Ning Chu froze for a moment, various news stories about drunken brawls flooding her mind, and hurriedly warned: “They’re drunk, so you’d better speak softly. Don’t start a fight with them.”

“Don’t worry.”

“Maybe it’s better to forget it? I’ll get up and write instead. We shouldn’t provoke them since we have class at ten tomorrow…”

Ning Chu’s voice trailed off.

Watching Wen Yang prepare to leave, even though she couldn’t see his expression, she felt an oppressive atmosphere gradually emanating from him. His tall figure was like an erupting volcano or a crouching beast, making her instinctively hold back her words of persuasion, feeling timid inside.

Wen Yang is angry…

This was the first time Ning Chu had seen Wen Yang angry, and she hadn’t expected it to be so intimidating.

Seeing Wen Yang leave, Ning Chu quickly got up and ran to the door to peek into the hallway.

“Wen Yang…”

“It’s fine.”

Wen Yang, expressionless, knocked on the neighboring door, and after a moment, when the door opened, a rush of alcohol smell hit him.

“It’s eleven o’clock; quiet down.”

“Got it! Got it! How annoying!”

Hearing the impatient voice, Ning Chu instinctively pulled her head back from the hallway and turned to grab her phone from the bed.

Oh no! I should hurry and call the cops!

Panicking, she dashed to the bed, reached for the phone on the bedside, but had already heard Wen Yang returning.

When Ning Chu looked up, she saw Wen Yang wearing a gentle smile, the intimidating aura from earlier vanished: “I’m back, dealt with it.”

“You hit them?”

“No, they were quite reasonable.”

“Really……”
