Chapter 21

“Ugh!?”

“Ugh…”

“What the heck is this?!”

I shouted a bit at the Commander guy leaning against the bed instead of lying on it.

I couldn’t help it.

Of course, I had yelled because the game wasn’t playing the way I wanted just a moment ago, but clearly, I heard laughter!

“You said it would be easy.”

“The difficulty is definitely easy.”

“Then why is it so hard?! My character dies after about three hits from normal monsters!”

I demanded a serious answer. After all, just a while ago, my character had been advancing smoothly after farming well, and all it took was three hits from a mob before I was history.

It was honestly shocking on many levels.

Really… while fighting a skeleton monster that suddenly appeared, I got stabbed in the back by another skeleton monster and died instantly.

I really didn’t understand.

Isn’t it a game? Shouldn’t I be able to survive?

In the games I knew, people hit by swords or guns usually had all their limbs intact and didn’t die most of the time.

This was nothing like I expected.

“What kind of game is this?”

“It’s just a difficult game. By the way, the difficulty you faced earlier was really easy.”

“……”

The current difficulty is supposed to be easy?

No matter how I looked at it, this didn’t seem right.

I mean, I died from three hits from a skeleton while I was fighting one on the side, and suddenly got stabbed from behind.

All my progress after diligently moving around for 15 minutes just went down the drain!

“Let me do it again. That was my first time! I can do better next time.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes! So please let me start over…!”

Maybe it was a really unfair death.

Normally, I wouldn’t act like this, but this time, I truly felt wronged.

It was the most unfair thing that had happened to me lately, and I was gripping the gamepad tightly.

No matter how you look at it, dying to two skeletons after 15 minutes of farming is just not right.

“Alright then. You can try one more time.”

“Really… I’ll definitely show you this time.”

The game was truly… a game with no sense of fairness at all.

The character I controlled started with a longsword that broke after a few swings and could only perform actions like walking, jumping, sitting, attacking… and rolling.

In fact, rolling was the most important action in this game.

It looked a little awkward, but it had an invincibility frame, so it was used as a dodge.

If that skeleton hadn’t appeared from behind, I would have definitely dodged the attacks normally and could have taken him down with the longsword I acquired through farming.

“Ugh….”

Back to the starting point of the game.

Yeah, that was the most unfair part.

When you die, you have to start all over.

The difficulty was easy, but the problem was that it had hardcore elements like this.

I lost all my gathered items, and everything I accomplished by defeating monsters got reset.

“Is it fun?”

“It’s not fun. I’m just unfairly dying, so I’m trying again.”

I operated the gamepad while lying on the Commander’s bed.

There was a TV in front of the bed, and the Commander had suggested I make myself comfortable here.

Well, it wasn’t a problem even if it wasn’t a super comfy bed.

“Ah.”

“I died.”

“……”

Ah.

Aah.

Aahhh.

Three thoughts popped into my head.

I wasn’t sure if that was right, but anyway… I died.

Again.

I mean, I died again, but this time, it hurt my head more than the first death.

“……”

“Are you okay?”

“I-I want to try again!”

I felt truly wronged.

This time, fortunately, I dodged the skeleton attacks by rolling to the side and managed to take it down without much trouble.

Yeah, I was definitely doing well and surviving.

But then, after moving ten steps, I stepped on a trap and died.

“I’m doing it again!”

“Uhm….”

“I never heard there were traps. How can there be a game without a tutorial? It’s clearly ridiculous!”

“Uhm….”

“Now that I know there are traps, I can definitely go further this time. I’m confident.”

I pleaded to the Commander guy resting on the bed.

I felt so unfairly wronged!

Suddenly, countless metal bars shot out from the right wall!

And I didn’t even realize it, just walking to the center got me stabbed and killed!

“Can I please try just once more…?”

“Lindera.”

“Yes….”

“Do you know what time it is?”

“Uh….”

Hearing the Commander’s words, I slightly turned my eyes to look at the watch… it was just past 12:20.

Why is he suddenly asking about the time?

Is he trying to avoid letting me play?

Does he mean to say just stop and get lost?

“It’s 12:23….”

“Then what time is it now?”

“……”

“Go eat lunch first.”

Ah.

So he was talking about lunch.

He suddenly asked about the time, and I got confused about what he meant.

As the Commander said, it was indeed time for lunch.

I hadn’t eaten breakfast and just came here.

I usually woke up a bit late on weekends and skipped breakfast anyway.

“Are you planning to continue without eating?”

“…No. Let’s go.”

“Okay, leave the pad there and come out quickly.”

“Yes….”

I felt wronged in many ways, but… I wasn’t playing because it was fun.

I was just making an effort out of stubbornness.

I didn’t need to put in so much effort into that weird game.

For now, I should eat and take a break.

*

“You’ve been playing the game more seriously than I expected.”

“I haven’t.”

“Is that so? You seemed like you were one with your character while playing.”

“……”

I wasn’t that serious about it.

I just played the game, died unfairly, and replayed it once more.

Sure, I was startled by the sudden monsters and traps here and there, but I absolutely did not have fun.

Not at all.

“Master… have you come to see me today as well?”

“I came to solve lunch. The Vice Commander is with me.”

“Is that so…? May I ask what brought you both along?”

“If it’s alright, of course.”

“Hmm… I just came from hanging out in my room.”

“Uh, Commander?”

“…Crap.”

I think I messed up.

It really seemed like I made a terrible mistake.

I wasn’t sure if she was insensitive or just doing this, but Soan’s expression wasn’t good.

She was glaring at me with what you would call… dead eyes.

She had a clear affection for the Commander and expressed it well.

She was responsible for the Commander’s meals three times a day, serving as a sort of maid who also happened to be a combat-capable agent.

All in all, she was a multi-talented agent responsible for the important food aspect of the ship besides the combat.

And the most dangerous part was… she had a yandere characteristic.

“Yes… is that so….”

And the most dangerous part was… she had a yandere characteristic.

“So, I ended up spending time in my room until it became this time.”

“Haha….”

“Commander, please don’t say that weird stuff. I was just playing a game in your room, wasn’t I?”

Spending time in my room? Hanging out?

I had to say that to prevent any misunderstandings since I kept saying things that could lead to ambiguity.

Sure, I was the Vice Commander, but the yanderes I knew weren’t really normal.

A knife used to chop fish or meat could suddenly be aimed at me.

Although I hoped that wouldn’t happen.

“Anyway, what’s the menu for today?”

“If it’s what my Master wants, I can make anything.”

“Then two plates of pasta… Is that alright?”

“Yes. I usually don’t picky about food.”

“That’s great. Then I’ll have two plates of pasta.”

“Understood.”

I had my explanation, but Soan’s expression had cooled down considerably.

I felt somewhat dizzy.

Anyway… that’s how we ended up seated at the table.

Normally, we were supposed to sit or go for serving, but… since the Commander came, I guess there was no other choice.

“It’s peaceful today.”

“……”

Does he not have a clue?

“Lindera.”

“Yes. Did you call for me?”

“How about playing a different game in the afternoon?”

“Excuse me?”

Suddenly?

I didn’t understand the intention behind suddenly switching game genres.

Ah, is it because I was doing too well?

So he’s trying to change the type of game to ensure I can’t clear it.

Well, there was no tutorial, and the difficulty was strange.

Considering that, I might have been doing better than expected.

At least among the new players starting the game.

“It’s fine by me.”

“…No. Let’s play an easier game in the afternoon.”

“Really, it’s fine.”

Before I took a sip of water, I said that.

It really was fine.

Continuing with that terrible game was more than enough.

“No. I’ll change it.”

“I said it’s fine, why do you keep insisting? Is there a reason?”

“……”

He didn’t answer.

I didn’t know what reason he had, but it was clear that it was nothing worth being concerned over.

Maybe he was just shocked by how impressive my skills were and didn’t want to see me continuing that dreadful game.

“Listen, that game… you’re terrible at it.”

“…What?”

“If I brought a little kid I knew from the time I was in Babil, they’d perform better than you….”

“……”

Ah.

I suddenly wanted to die a little.

Or at least hide somewhere.
