Chapter 6: Midakudo Trading Company
“Let’s hear what they have to say inside for now.”
As I stepped into the orphanage, it was clear that the place was falling apart and desperately needed repairs right away.
I sat down in a chair in the reception room, and Saintpaulia began to speak.
“Please reinstate the orphanage’s budget. If things continue like this, everyone will starve to death!”
“What do you mean? The orphanage’s funding should be available. I don’t recall stopping it.”
“Since about a year ago, the funds have been gradually decreasing, and three months ago, they completely ran out. When I inquired about it, I was told it was the lord’s instruction.”
From the look of desperation on Saintpaulia’s face, she wasn’t lying.
“Who was handling the accounts for Iris Orphanage?”
Ballad had thrown all the troublesome paperwork to the maids.
“Crocus and Dahlia. They were hired as maids a year ago through an introduction from Midakudo Trading Company. Since they had experience in accounting from there, you entrusted them with all the administrative tasks.”
Midakudo Trading Company!
That name sounded familiar; it was one of the evil organizations mentioned in the Magical World: Baldoland.
Of course, Ballad wasn’t the only one opposing the protagonist; ultimately, he would battle against the demon king, but there were others too—Midakudo Trading Company, Marquis Bunder, Bishop Kirelu, and so on.
So, one of the maids came from Midakudo Trading Company, and it’s no coincidence that the funding started to decrease about a year ago.
“Got it. Here’s the budget for this month and the previous ones.”
I took out five gold coins from my item box and handed them to Saintpaulia.
“And with this, go buy some food.”
I passed three silver coins to Cattleya along with a note.
With this, Saintpaulia shouldn’t have to become a slave.
Midakudo Trading Company appears to be conducting legitimate business on the surface, but they’re involved in illegal slavery behind the scenes.
Ballad had been used by Midakudo Trading Company without realizing it.
Just as I was pondering what to do about them, Cattleya returned.
“I’ve bought everything listed in the note.”
“Alright, I’ll start cooking now. Where’s the kitchen, Saintpaulia?”
“B-bocchama, you’re cooking? Are you sure about that?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got cooking skills.”
What I was going to make, recalling my past life’s memories of field kitchens, was tonjiru (pork miso soup)!
I had confirmed that we had miso, so I decided to make it, considering the nutritional balance for the orphans.
“It’s delicious, nya!”
Mikey and the other orphans happily ate the tonjiru.
“For now, Rose, when we return to the mansion, restrain Crocus and Dahlia.”
Rose nodded silently.
1078 days left until the scheduled date of death.
