Chapter 13: The Chef’s Recollection – Hunt
Hunt, the head chef, was originally the personal cook of Ballad’s mother, who came along when she married into the Deiman Family. His culinary skills caught the Duke’s attention, leading him to become the head chef for the Deiman household.
Now, he has passed the head chef position to his son, Rent, and has become Ballad’s personal chef instead.
Worried about Ballad diving deeper into the path of villainy, Hunt decided to stay close and support him.
In the original story, only Iris and Hunt were Ballad’s true allies.
However, recently, Hunt has been perplexed.
He reduced the amount of food and stopped making overly sweet desserts.
While this shows a concern for health that could be seen as positive, he has recently started receiving a note with cooking requests.
“Please make this for lunch today.”
The first note included a recipe for a dish called a sandwich—simply ham and vegetables stuffed between bread, but he was impressed by the idea.
The next day, he heard he made a dish called “pork soup” at the orphanage.
Using miso, one of the many seasonings he collected, which he had yet to figure out how to use, he prepared it.
When he immediately asked to be taught the recipe, he quickly handed over a memo.
Of course, he made it right away, and it was delicious!
The following note had the word “mayonnaise” written on it.
This too was delicious! It seemed like it could go with anything.
“It’s a universal seasoning!”
Ballad, observing his excitement, added, “Yuzu kosho is also a formidable universal seasoning.”
“W-What is that? Please tell me!”
“Hunt, you’re too excited. I can’t tell you yet; I need to check if we have yuzu first.”
Ballad had a bit of a troubled look on his face.
Oh no, I got too carried away with the new recipes and pressed Ballad too hard.
“More importantly, I need you to check for something else. If we have this, we can create one of the ultimate dishes.”
Then he handed over another note.
This one read “curry” and included ingredients: cinnamon ○, cardamom ×, turmeric ×, coriander ×, cumin ○.
“I have cinnamon and cumin. Now I just need to find cardamom, turmeric, and coriander.”
Thus began my quest for ingredients to recreate my ultimate dish—curry.
“Uh, I’ve become the owner of Mofu Burger in town, so can you send me a bunch of mayonnaise? What’s a Mofu Burger? If it’s a dish, please give me the recipe note!”
Please stop introducing mysterious new dishes without my knowledge, Ballad!
1. Yuzu koshō (柚子胡椒, also yuzu goshō) is a type of Japanese seasoning. It is a paste made from chili peppers, yuzu peel and salt, which is then allowed to ferment.
