Chapter 18

*

The village chief of Wonderhill, Kevin, was sweating bullets as he listened to the current situation.

A guest had visited this remote country village, where people rarely came, making the local feuding even fiercer.

“Gold Tower Master?! That Wolfram Alchemist has come?”

Not just any alchemist, but the owner of the magic tower built to fend off the Demon King’s attacks! Wolfram was said to be able to turn even stones lying on the street into gold.

Famous for calculating people’s worth solely in terms of money and wealth, if there was a loss to her, she was known to remove it from sight at any cost.

Rumors of people going bankrupt with huge debts to her could be heard even in the back alleys.

“Why…?”

After hearing reports from other villagers, Kevin could only imagine why.

Did someone get caught smuggling supplies meant for the capital after being ambushed by bandits?

Or perhaps it got out that he bought sick or ill beastman slaves, adding a premium to sell to the peculiar nobles in the area?

Or maybe he got busted for illegally collecting taxes to fill his own pockets?

If not that, was it exposed that he had been collecting lepers and prostitutes in the back alleys to serve as living blood bags with black magicians?

‘If any of those are found out, my head will roll…!!’

The chief, Kevin, swallowed hard and hurriedly prepared to meet the Gold Tower Master.

He remained blissfully unaware that all of this was a result of Verdandi receiving a divine oracle and being chosen as the Hero.

He was simply a despicable, loathsome character who was anxious about his wicked deeds being uncovered.

“Oh dear…! Welcome! Welcome to our Wonderhill village!!”

As soon as he caught sight of the Gold Tower Master, Wolfram, Kevin rushed over and bowed deeply. His shiny bald head gleamed like a mirror, reflecting the sunlight.

“Ugh, that bald old man? From afar, I thought he was an octopus.”

Wolfram remarked with a tone of disgust. It was quite a rude comment, but he suppressed his bubbling emotions and forced a smile.

“What brings such a noble figure like you to this humble village…?”

Kevin fawned over her, reading the air like a fly. Hmm, there seemed to be two unfamiliar figures nearby.

A strong man with white hair and blue eyes, and a girl with striking black hair and red eyes who looked like a twisted version of him stood beside the Gold Tower Master.

“Who are the two beside you…?”

They were far too different in dress and atmosphere to be fellow magicians of the magic tower.

“This brat? My junior?”

At that moment, a chilling sensation ran down his spine like a knife, and a cold voice pierced his ears.

“Ugh, a ghost…!!”

Crushed by that murderous aura, Kevin couldn’t rise and fell to the ground in embarrassment.

“Yes! The village chief has always looked at me with such sticky eyes! It felt so perverted as if you were breathing hot air while surveying me up and down!”

At that moment, Verdandi chuckled, covering her mouth like it was amusing, behind Bi Wol and Bing Yeon.

“Ve, Verdandi…? How are you with the Gold Tower Master? Have you committed some kind of disrespect…?”

Seeing her face, Kevin realized something was amiss.

How could the child of a woman who had been thoroughly ostracized at the village act alongside the noble Gold Tower Master?

“It was you who committed the disrespect!”

Verdandi pointed at Kevin’s drenched groin, indicating the gravity of the situation that was so severe it could emit a foul smell. Someone stepped forward.

“Kevin Osclo, you know your charges all too well.”

A man with white hair pressed his temples, expressing his displeasure with body language. This man’s identity was Bing Yeon, who had come from the East to find Verdandi.

“What do you mean…? I’m a good person who looks to the sky and has never committed a single sin…”

“…You’re a villain! There’s no way he’s not a villain!”

Wagging her tongue to tease him, Verdandi made Kevin click his tongue in frustration; he cursed her silently.

“Shut up! What do you know, Verdandi?!”

Given that he was born from a rape, it annoyed him that she always walked around smiling.

His malevolent desire to paint that bright smile with tears and despair kept bubbling up.

“I was the only one who voted against kicking you out from our village! You should know the grace of that!”

Originally, he had planned to isolate Verdandi from the whole village and pretend to be the only one who understood her to take everything away.

His desire was to make her into a toy to beg him to not abandon her, no matter how severely he tormented her.

That was the ugly inner self of the villain Kevin Osclo, as depicted in the original “I Must Kill the Hero.”

“…Bi Wol, this guy’s head seems a bit too high.”

The original creator, Han Dohyun, now nestled in Bing Yeon’s body, slowly pointed his finger downwards.

“Yes, Master. I will do as commanded.”

“…Ugh?!”

Boom─! With a bang, Kevin’s forehead met the ground. Bi Wol’s hand on his neck delivered an immense force.

“You illegally sold beastman slaves to regional nobles and turned kids, the elderly, and women into blood bags for black magicians.”

Boom─! Boom─!

Every time Bing Yeon stated a charge, Kevin’s forehead hit the ground. Warm blood streamed down from his broken forehead.

“You lied your way into saying that the tribute to the capital was ambushed by bandits, using it as an excuse to pillage the villagers of more land and gold.”

Shivers.

Kevin felt the chill course through him as he watched Bing Yeon reveal all the wicked deeds he had thought of.

“How do you know that…!”

“Can one hide the sky with a hand?”

Seeing Kevin flustered, Bing Yeon, scoffing at him, began listing even more of his charges.

“You’re the one who flirted with married women and sacrificed children to the bandits to use as serfs.”

With each revelation, Kevin’s head was pressed harder into the ground, creating such holes that they threatened to engulf him.

“Village chief…?!”

“Isn’t that the Gold Tower Master…?”

Only then did the villagers gather around, whispering among themselves. The village chief, bleeding profusely, along with suspicious outsiders next to Verdandi.

“And you also orchestrated the village to slander my precious apprentice and led everyone to point fingers at her.”

Bing Yeon slowly lowered his gaze to look at Kevin, who was now a mess of tears and snot.

No matter how much it was a setting created by him, he thought that giving a chance for repentance would bring change.

“Trash.”

“Exactly! Trash!”

Echoing Bi Wol and Verdandi’s words, they were right; this guy was trash. Kevin continued to murmur that he wasn’t at fault, just feeling aggrieved.

“I, I did nothing wrong….”

“Okay, then let’s ask the villagers directly. You there, name one evil deed the village chief has done.”

Bing Yeon was so disgusted by this hypocrite that he pointed at a boy to set up a follow-up question.

“Me?!”

“Yeah, who else would there be but you?”

As Kevin tried to dodge the question, still looking around, Bing Yeon released a slight chill to prompt him to speak.

“…My sister is actually a witch, and he spread false rumors and said we should trial her for burning!”

The boy’s revelation stunned even Bing Yeon. The village chief’s evil deeds had turned an innocent girl into ashes.

“Th-that’s because your parents didn’t pay their village development funds…! You have to pay double for having children…!”

“In fact, he was trying to make a move with insidious thoughts, but when we resisted fiercely and ran away, he spread rumors to kill us!”

Kevin, still trying to justify himself, faced the ground as Bing Yeon crushed his face into the earth. He was so tired of hearing that filthy mouth speak.

At that moment,

Thud, thud. Something flew from around them.

“You filthy demon child in human skin!”

“Right! This trash! Die!”

“We didn’t know he was like this!”

The villagers began throwing rocks at the chief to dump all blame on him.

“Gold Tower Master! We were deceived by the village chief all this time!”

“Everyone, let’s help those who came to save our village!”

Good and evil flipped like a pancake. It was a truly fast transformation of these dark, scheming humans.

– [The one before your eyes is a ‘villain.’]

Just for throwing stones at the village chief, all the accumulated evil deeds wouldn’t be erased.

“Verdandi, you’ve had it tough, haven’t you…?”

They flashed friendly smiles at Verdandi, extending their hands. But to her, those hands felt more like claws of a beast.

In that moment of feeling fear, disgust, and discomfort.

“Shut up! You’re all just like that bastard getting hit by stones!”

A wide back and shoulders blocked the space between the villagers and Verdandi. A man who now felt like a relief.

“You all had your chance!”

It was Bing Yeon, with distinctive white hair and blue eyes.

“You could have treated Verdandi kindly, reprimanded the chief for his faults, and welcomed those cast out to the back alleys in this village…!”

Bing Yeon raised his voice to the townsfolk around him. His veins were pronounced on his neck, and his eyes glowed with anger.

“But you didn’t. Just out of cowardice and that ridiculous reason that others were doing it too, you turned a blind eye to injustice!”

At Bing Yeon’s words, the villagers froze, pondering as they turned to look at Verdandi with distaste.

“I despise people like this the most. Those who lie to themselves and try to rationalize their own faults, trash.”

Bing Yeon’s sharp words made Verdandi’s heart beat louder.

‘He’s getting angry for me….’

She couldn’t stop the swell of feelings seeing him so majestic, shining with an aura of rage that enveloped the entire village.

“…None among you has not committed the same wrongs as the chief. You filthy bastards.”

*

“I’m going to miss leaving like this. I feel like I’ve formed a bond with you guys while I was here. Thank you for telling me the location of the Philosopher’s Stone….”

“Then take care of Verdandi’s mother.”

I remarked as I got onto the carriage taking a different route to meet Azazel.

Now I had to part ways with the Gold Tower Master. I’d decided to leave Verdandi’s safety to her.

“Yeah! Bing Yeon, take care! Make sure to come find me whenever you visit the magic tower!”

Wolfram waved goodbye energetically. It was a heartwarming feat to have revived a person who was supposed to die.

“That means I owe you one. Junior. You’ve had your revenge on the village people, right?”

“Thank you! Senior!”

Inside the carriage, Bi Wol and Verdandi were chatting away. Seeing the successful outcome of my proposal made my lips naturally curl upwards.

“Verdandi, don’t you regret it? While you did take your revenge on those villagers, it might be too late for you to accept….”

I asked, worried that her deep-seated wounds wouldn’t be easily erased.

But,

“…It’s not too late!”

Verdandi responded with a bright smile as if nothing had happened.

“I’m grateful to meet my master now! I almost went insane, believing blindly in the oracle!”

I had prevented her from accidentally killing her mother and nearly falling down the path of madness.

Feeling gratitude for that was not strange at all.

“I’ll work hard like my senior!”

“Yeah, think well… What?”

Just then, Verdandi took advantage of me growing distracted while gazing outside the carriage.

Peck.

“As the Hero, I want to rescue you, my beloved princess, and make you my wife!”

She shyly kissed my cheek, and

“Y-you little vixen…!! You’re doing things I haven’t even done yet?!”

The sight made Bi Wol scream with a stiff, shocked expression.
