Until we walked out of the civil affairs bureau, Ning Chu’s smile didn’t fade, her mouth chattering excitedly.
“So fast, we wrapped it up in less than half an hour.”
“You actually still want a marriage check-up? Is that because you don’t trust me or because you were a player before?”
“Come on, you were a total virgin before college~”
Ning Chu chattered beside me like a sparrow, while Wen Yang looked out at the bright sunshine, and for some reason, a sudden calmness filled his joyful heart.
He gently took his wife’s hand, wrapping it with his palm, unconsciously applying a bit more pressure.
“What’s wrong?”
“Suddenly feeling the weight of responsibility.” He lowered his head, glancing at her pretty face, “From now on, you’re my person, and there’s no turning back.”
“Is that a threat?”
Ning Chu tugged Wen Yang down the steps, stepping out of the shadow of the eaves and into the golden sunlight.
She felt the warmth of the sun, the heat of Wen Yang’s palm, and her turbulent emotions gradually settled. She looked up at the tall figure standing beside her, her eyes filled with warmth as if it were tangible.
“Wen Yang…”
“Time to change how you address me.”
“Hubby… I’m not used to it.”
She paused, her fingers brushing aside her long hair, then lowered her head and whispered, “Doesn’t it feel odd?”
“Nothing has really changed, we just have an extra piece of ID, but it feels like… like…”
She struggled to find the words, but Wen Yang understood her meaning: “Like suddenly being able to do anything?”
“Pretty much?”
Wen Yang gently embraced Ning Chu’s shoulders as if he was holding the entire world in his arms, gazing ahead at the straight road and whispering, “It’s like having family, suddenly giving me a solid base, making everything feel manageable.”
Pressure, burdens, responsibilities weighed heavily on him.
Yet remarkably, he didn’t feel lost or afraid; instead, he brimmed with motivation, as if there was now support on his shoulders and an extra heart in his chest.
Having felt a bit inferior due to the absence of family while growing up, he now confidently believed that with Ning Chu by his side, every challenge ahead would be a piece of cake.
He felt like he had matured in an instant, as if he had truly grown up at that moment, had truly become a man.
“Shall we wander around? Hubby~”
Ning Chu playfully elongated the last syllable, looking up, only to find Wen Yang gazing at her, his eyes filled with an ownership that seemed to devour her.
She tiptoed closer, brushing her red lips against Wen Yang’s mouth.
Even though they were still in the street, Ning Chu, with her shy nature, merely brushed her lips against his before looking down as if jolted by electricity, her cheeks instantly turning a charming crimson.
“I even borrowed my mom’s VIP card…”
“Didn’t I feed you enough last night?”
“Is eating like a meal—once you’ve had it yesterday, you don’t eat again today?”
Ning Chu tugged Wen Yang’s hand toward the couple hotel that both mother and daughter frequently visited, her spirits high as she tiptoed, her steps light and lively as if she were a little sprite.
“Too bad we don’t have a house yet, still missing a home.” Wen Yang lamented as his plans were disrupted. “I was thinking of bringing you home with a grand entrance, and now, we don’t even have a wedding.”
“When I’m with you, isn’t that already home?”
“True enough.”
“I don’t mind~”
He teased with a smile, “Then when we argue in the future, don’t use this against me.”
“Am I the type to bring up old scores?”
Ning Chu playfully poked Wen Yang’s waist in annoyance.
The morning sun wasn’t too fierce, a gentle breeze swept through the streets.
She held Wen Yang’s hand, slowly strolling under the shade of the trees, her chatter almost nonstop.
“Hubby, when do you think we should have kids? Maybe after we buy a house? But I’ve heard it hurts! I’m kind of scared.”
“Hubby, I want to travel north and play in the snow.”
“Let’s buy a big flat! Like Lily’s house! Super big, with a floor-to-ceiling window to enjoy the night view!”
Wen Yang nodded along, mentally noting down everything Ning Chu said.
“If you’re scared of pain, then don’t have kids; there’s no royal title to inherit in our family, after all.”
His gaze often lingered on Ning Chu, lost in thought as if he saw that first sweet little boy from years ago. He clearly remembered the moment Ning Chu collapsed in the bathroom, blood staining her legs, and her desperate back as she tried to escape.
He couldn’t pinpoint when he started to have feelings for her.
Maybe it was the first time she showed care for him, or it could be the first time he saw her blush with jealousy…
Either way, that former college roommate had now become the companion for his latter half of life.
“Wife.”
“What is it?”
Ning Chu looked up, her lightly made-up face still flushed, curiosity sparkling in her peach blossom eyes, the corners always tinged with a hint of rose, making her look playful yet enchanting.
“Nothing, just wanted to get used to calling you that.”
“Honestly, it sounds strange.”
She shook her head in annoyance, her long ponytail swaying: “It makes me feel old.”
“Then how about calling you ‘wife’?”
“Anything works, I’ll get used to it.”
The road beneath them should have felt long, but with Wen Yang holding his wife’s hand, it felt like just a moment had passed before they arrived at the couple hotel’s entrance.
“Where’s my mom’s card…” Ning Chu looked down, rummaging through Wen Yang’s bag for the VIP card while saying, “My mom also didn’t care about the family and sneaked the household registration book to get married.”
“Now she’s in the position of my grandpa and grandma; I wonder how she feels~ that must be quite a ride~”
Wen Yang didn’t dare joke about his mother-in-law: “Probably not great?”
“She’s probably just waiting to see me make a fool of myself, thinking that a few years later, you’ll leave me, and I’ll come crying back to her.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Indeed, even if I have kids, I won’t go back to apologize.” Ning Chu pulled out the card, smiling as she asked, “Isn’t that exactly like my mom? Raising a kid alone?”
Wen Yang pretended to be angry, lightly tapping her head: “You don’t have much faith in me?”
“That hurts!”
“Don’t worry, even if I starve, I’ll make sure you have something to eat.”
“I was just joking!”
Ning Chu huffed, rubbing her forehead, and walked briskly into the hotel.
But when they reached the hotel front desk, her anger vanished completely as she shyly handed the membership card to Wen Yang: “You go ahead.”
Now that they were no longer in the honeymoon phase, she was incredibly shy.
“We’re a legal couple now; what’s so embarrassing about checking into a couple hotel?”
“Go!”
