Chapter 109

It’s time to assess the qualities of candidates to select trainees.

Honestly, I thought it was a bit cocky. I mean, back in the day, no one wanted to learn even when Camilla, the hero, was offering to teach.

Even when I wrote strategy guides for the gallery and Camilla was going around promoting herself as the ultimate pick, she got bizarrely little attention.

People would just roast the idea; if I suggested it, no one would step up and say they wanted to try. I mean, it was a trashy game with hardly anyone playing it anyway.

I keep reminiscing about the old days. It’s become a kind of habit. After saying it so often, even the viewers who initially listened intently started calling me “Old Kayak” or “Ruler of Abyss Top Park.”

I’ve come to realize once again that there’s no need to share old stories that most viewers and people can’t relate to.

Anyway, back to the topic.

The Abyss nickname “Cutie Camilla” was quite a promising candidate for a trainee. It was impressive enough to elicit admiration.

“Ooh…”

What’s the most important factor when selecting a student? Talent? Tier?

Of course, it’s great to be talented; they’d learn quickly and understand my ramblings perfectly.

As for tiers… well, I recruited from Bronze-Gold, so it hardly matters. It’s a shocking statement for the Golds watching my stream, but I think Bronze and Gold are pretty much the same.

In my opinion, the most important thing is… passion.

Even faced with all sorts of unfair criticism, it’s the strong will that never gives up and the passion to specifically play as Camilla among many heroes.

I didn’t share this with the viewers, but it was my internal evaluation criterion. It’s not that complicated, but it’s not easy to meet those conditions either.

People each have different mental fortitudes. To put it simply, they need a strong mentality.

That way, it’s easier for me to teach, and they won’t break down when they face hardships along the way. Overcoming one’s limits is a grueling task.

Leveling up tiers is the same. Breaking free from a tier means wiping out all previous bad habits and adopting new playstyles.

Unlike computers, people can’t be formatted. So, repeated practice is the only solution.

*Cutie Camilla
– Bronze 1 – 13 LP
(438 wins 714 losses 38%)
Win 714 Lose 38%)

In that regard, the first candidate I encountered, ‘Cutie Camilla’, could be said to perfectly align with all the conditions I mentioned.

[Can’t see any blue in the record lol]

[Wow, how many games did you play?]

[Over 1000 games, that’s insane lol]

[Win rate, urgh, makes me wanna gag]

[Just a beast, huh?]

[This one wouldn’t get it even if you taught it for real]

[In Bronze and Silver, you just have to grind enough games to keep your win rate at 48-50% to climb]

[So that’s why you can’t climb, even though they’re giving out points]

[Playing 10 games a day is tough; how many did you actually play?]

[This is on par with some wacky dude level;]

The viewers who had been spamming to watch losses looked taken aback when they faced this record.

It was certainly not easy. The word ‘desperate’ on the application was indeed true. I have no clue what happened, but you wouldn’t play this much unless you were serious.

Even just a few hours ago, the record was still showing. How many games did she play, seriously?

-Camilla 1.01: 1 rating, 477 games, 38%

And at the very top of that record was Camilla’s proud placement with the most games.

[Wow, what’s up with that rating…]

[Nothing over 2 points lol]

[It’s more surprising that Camilla even broke 1]

[How many deaths did she rack up?]

[She is putting in the effort, though, okay, Camilla with 477 games?]

[477 games at 38% isn’t easy]

[She’s trying hard, but hmmm…]

[You’ve got no talent, just quit]

It’s like they can’t remember their frog tadpole days; the viewers must have been in Bronze at some point, yet they are being so harsh. Not everyone can be high-tier from the start!

“Ahh, come on, everyone, type nicely in the chat. What are you saying to our precious student?”

[Is she already a precious student? lol]

[She hit the jackpot on the first try]

[Cutie Camilla became a trainee of Kayak with a 682 to 1 competition rate, whoa]

[There’s no one quite like her, okay]

[Content-optimized talent]

[If she posts on VTubing, people will love it]

[Think of it as a Bronze survival diary or something like that]

“Anyway, the trainee for the Camilla junior training broadcast is ‘Cutie Camilla’. The rest can aim for the next opportunity… Is this person here right now?”

[If she’s not here, let’s pick again]

[If you’re not tuning in live, you have no right, okay]

[Yes yes yes I’m here I’m here teacher Cutie Camilla is here]
“Teacher Cutie Camilla is here!”

“Ah, there she is. I’ll send a private message. Just a moment. Could you send me your Discord ID? Ah, never mind. You might be busy right now. If you’re tied up, it’s okay to do it later. Don’t feel pressured; just do it at your convenience.”

Now that I’ve chosen my student, there’s no way I’m switching them out for someone else. I’m not just doing this for live broadcasts or VTuber content; I genuinely want to teach. I hope my intentions get across to my student.

Just like with Riri, teaching someone isn’t a one-day deal. It requires time and consistency, which means this could be a long-term gig. It’s better to cultivate one student seriously than switch students midway, which would only be exhausting.

“I’m fine with it!!!! I want to start right now!!!! I have no plans, just been watching the stream!!!!”

“How boldly saying you have no plans at 2 PM on Thursday….”

“Definitely a true fan, lol.”

The number of exclamation points is off the charts. That means there’s enthusiasm! From this outlook, it seems like I’m not going to change students after all.

Having already received consent from the student, I immediately started the Discord connection.

“Cutie Camilla.”

The Discord nickname was no different from the Abyss nickname. The only point of interest was the profile picture.

There, was a photo of Camilla. No, it was someone who looked a lot like Camilla but was indeed someone else.

That’s right, it was my photo. It seemed to be a snapshot taken during streaming, where I was wearing headphones and my gaze was firmly facing forward.

I had already confirmed that my memes were circulating around on boards and galleries. Just googling ‘Camilla girl’ or ‘Camilla cosplayer’ would bring up my immortalized self on the internet.

But seeing my picture unexpectedly used as a profile picture felt strange. It was a mix of embarrassment and the thought that as my fan, they put my picture right up there, leaving me speechless. Such a mixed feeling.
There was no way that the over 10,000 viewers wouldn’t notice what I just realized.

[Wait, I thought it was Camilla but it was Kayak instead]

[The gal has been parading around with that face plastered everywhere, lol]

[Must be a real fan; I also have Kayak’s picture as my profile, you know]

[Did you get the host’s permission?]

[Those crazy noodle-headed kids;;]

[For real, that’s creepy as hell]

Well, I mean… it’s not like it’s impossible. After all, it’s just a photo, and I’ve heard that getting a photo removed from the internet can cost an astronomical amount.

Even if I told them not to, it’s clear that someone wouldn’t listen, and I can’t exactly keep saying “please don’t use my photo” in every broadcast.

I’m not exactly feeling horrid about it. It feels a bit like when you set a picture of your favorite celebrity as your profile back in school. Saying “celebrity” out loud feels a bit embarrassing, but it’s true that I’m kind of a public figure.

So, I wasn’t really thinking I’d complain about them using my picture. I don’t even want to control that. Who has the energy to regulate every little thing? It’s already too late once your face is out there. Unless I had gone full no-cam, of course.

What I do wish is… they would use a prettier picture of me. That one isn’t bad, but there’s just something a bit unsatisfactory about it. Surely, there’s a better one out there.

While I was thinking about how to ask them to switch to a prettier one, the call finally connected.

“Hello, Teacher…!”

As the call connected, I could hear a voice. It wasn’t as lively as in messages. There was strength in the voice, but it was slightly trembling, which showed that the other person was nervous.

However, I was also caught off guard for a different reason.

[Kayak’s Footwipe donated 1,000 won!]

– Cojaim?

I momentarily forgot my original intention of asking to change the photo and just repeated aloud the sound that came with the donation.

“Was it Coja?”

The owner of the account that has played over 1,000 games this season and has my picture as their Discord profile. Nicknamed “Super Cute Kayak.”

Turns out my new trainee, with such a descriptor, was definitely a girl.
